Many people question how their exercise regimen may be impacted by eye surgery or an eye issue. Although it is crucial to stay active, some forms of exercise could be detrimental.

Here are some broad pointers that can be useful to you, but keep in mind: Before starting any new workout programme, consult your ophthalmologist first.

A cataract, or cloudy natural lens inside the eye, will not get worse with exercise. It might be challenging to exercise or engage in sports safely if you have a cataract that impairs your eyesight. You can carry on with your regular exercise routine if your cataract does not impair your vision.

Your vision is restricted by a cloudy lens, which cataract surgery removes. Following the procedure, there are a few activity limits that help promote a smooth recovery. These restrictions including no swimming. Water can cause infection or irritate the eye. Depending on your surgery, swimming (in any type of water) may be restricted for up to 4 weeks to protect the eye. No strenuous exercise. Large spikes in your heart rate can raise eye pressure, which can disturb healing of the eye. Avoid lifting weights or other heavy objects and do not put your head below your waist, such as with yoga positions.

Soon after surgery, light aerobic activity like walking may be permitted. As your eye will be particularly sensitive to light, make sure to use sunglasses with a wraparound design. Additionally, sunglasses stop dust and other allergens from getting in the eyes.

When you can restart more intense exercise, your surgeon will be able to advise you.

After cataract surgery, it is not uncommon to require this laser operation to restore eyesight. After a posterior capsulotomy, there are often no restrictions on activity, but see your surgeon to be careful.

After suffering an eye injury, consult your ophthalmologist before starting any exercise again. The eye is more prone to further harm and infection after suffering from wounds such a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, or globe rupture.

Regular, safe exercise is beneficial for those with glaucoma. However, excessive exercise that pushes and strains your body too much might increase eye pressure (this pressure is known as IOP, or intraocular pressure). IOP that is too high might harm the optic nerve and impair eyesight.

The Glaucoma Research Foundation advises yoga practitioners to stay away from extended head-down positions like downward-facing dog and standing forward bend.
